Creatures of the Night

My friends The Spokes People create kick-ass events for the Sydney Rides Festival. Every gathering is unmissable, from the Street Fair of Cycling Goodness, to the Goldsprints Roller Racing and the Instabition Exhibition. It’s nice to see familiar, enthusiastic faces year to year as the festival grows and more Sydneysiders take up cycling!

I think it’s fair to say that everybody’s favourite Spokes People event is the Creatures of the Night ride. Cyclists dress up in Halloween costumes and ride in a group through the streets of Sydney at night, stopping for some beers and activities along the way.

This year my friend Liz and I went as clowns! (Liz is the pretty lady below in the purple wig). I took the idea from this blog post at Oh Happy Day. It worked really well as a last minute costume. I used coloured card instead of paper daisies, because I already had some at home and it was sturdier. We only had to buy the clown noses and party hats, so it was a super cheap costume too!

The beautiful Kit made her own Carmen Miranda-inspired fruity headress.  The three of us cycled in together to meet the ride at The Rose in Chippendale.

From The Rose we rode to Observatory Hill at The Rocks, bemusing drivers and pedestrians along the way.

When we got there, we piled into the pagoda for a pumpkin carving competition.

And then jumped back on our bikes to ride to another pub..

Another ridiculously fun Creatures of the Night ride. Can’t wait till next year! Thanks Spokes People – you legends!

(There are still some events on this weekend, like bike films in an outdoor cinema at Cathedral Square – check out the Sydney Rides website for details.)
